LIFESPAN BY TIRE TYPE

Different tire types are engineered for different purposes, which significantly affects their lifespan.

All-Season Touring

$0.02 - $0.03/mi

Miles

50,000 - 70,000 miles

Years

4-6 years

The most common tire type, designed for year-round driving in moderate climates. Excellent balance of comfort, longevity, and wet/dry traction.

Best For

Daily commuters, family vehicles, sedans, and crossovers

Performance All-Season

$0.03 - $0.05/mi

Miles

40,000 - 55,000 miles

Years

3-5 years

Sporty handling with reasonable longevity. Softer compound than touring tires provides better grip but wears faster.

Best For

Sports sedans, sporty coupes, drivers who prioritize handling

Summer Performance

$0.05 - $0.08/mi

Miles

25,000 - 40,000 miles

Years

2-4 years

Maximum grip in dry and wet conditions above 45°F. Soft rubber compound wears quickly but delivers exceptional handling.

Best For

Sports cars, track days, warm climate enthusiasts

Winter/Snow

$0.03 - $0.05/mi

Miles

25,000 - 40,000 miles

Years

4-6 seasons

Specialized compound stays flexible in cold. Should only be used below 45°F. Lasts many seasons when properly stored.

Best For

Regions with harsh winters, snow, and ice

All-Terrain (Light Truck)

$0.04 - $0.06/mi

Miles

40,000 - 60,000 miles

Years

3-5 years

Rugged construction for on and off-road use. Aggressive tread patterns wear faster on pavement.

Best For

Trucks, SUVs, off-road enthusiasts, work vehicles

Grand Touring

$0.02 - $0.025/mi

Miles

60,000 - 80,000+ miles

Years

5-7 years

Premium longevity with refined ride quality. Often comes with mileage warranties. Best cost-per-mile value.

Best For

Luxury vehicles, high-mileage drivers, comfort priority

WHAT AFFECTS TIRE LIFE

Many factors beyond tire quality determine how long your tires will last.

Driving Habits

  • Aggressive acceleration and braking wear tires 20-30% faster
  • High-speed driving generates more heat and wear
  • Frequent short trips don't let tires warm up properly
  • Hard cornering wears outer/inner edges unevenly

Road Conditions

  • Rough roads and potholes accelerate wear
  • Gravel and debris cause cuts and punctures
  • Highway miles are gentler than city driving
  • Construction zones expose tires to debris

Climate & Weather

  • UV exposure degrades rubber over time
  • Extreme heat accelerates aging and wear
  • Temperature swings affect tire pressure
  • Salt and chemicals in winter damage sidewalls

Vehicle Alignment

  • Misalignment causes rapid uneven wear
  • Check alignment after hitting curbs or potholes
  • Align at least once per year or with new tires
  • Worn suspension components affect alignment

SIGNS YOU NEED NEW TIRES

Know when it's time to replace your tires for safety and performance.

Warning SignSeverityAction Required
Tread depth below 4/32"WarningStart shopping for replacements
Tread depth at 2/32" (wear bars visible)CriticalReplace immediately - legally worn out
Uneven wear patternsWarningCheck alignment and suspension, may need early replacement
Cracks in sidewallCriticalReplace soon - tire is aging or damaged
Bulges or blistersCriticalReplace immediately - structural damage
Vibration while drivingWarningInspect for damage, check balance and alignment
Tire older than 6 yearsWarningInspect carefully, consider replacement regardless of tread

THE PENNY TEST

Insert a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, your tread is below 2/32" and you need new tires immediately. If the tread covers part of his head, you have more than 2/32" remaining. For better wet traction, use a quarter—if you can see the top of Washington's head, consider replacing soon (below 4/32").

EXTEND YOUR TIRE LIFE

Proper maintenance can add thousands of miles to your tires and save hundreds of dollars.

Check Pressure Monthly

Extends life up to 20%

Under-inflated tires wear faster on edges, reduce fuel economy, and can overheat. Over-inflated tires wear in the center. Check when cold.

Rotate Every 5,000-7,500 Miles

Extends life up to 15%

Front and rear tires wear differently. Regular rotation ensures even wear and maximizes lifespan across all four tires.

Annual Alignment Check

Prevents 30%+ premature wear

Even minor misalignment causes rapid uneven wear. Get checked after hitting potholes or curbs, or if you notice pulling.

Balance When Needed

Extends life up to 10%

Unbalanced tires cause vibration and uneven wear. Balance when installing new tires and when you feel vibration.

Inspect Regularly

Prevents catastrophic failures

Look for cuts, bulges, embedded objects, and uneven wear. Catching problems early prevents blowouts and extends life.

Drive Smoothly

Extends life up to 25%

Gentle acceleration, braking, and cornering significantly reduce wear. Avoid potholes and debris when possible.
